Down to the Sea in Tears

Written: 1974

Writers: David Jenneson, Alan Hovden

Status: Recorded but unpublished

Genre and Style: Moody up tempo pop ballad with a Brian Ferry feel and great guitar hooks

Comments: Dave: Down to the Sea in Tears explores the question first posed by author Kurt Vonnegut Jr. – why are we born only to suffer and die? The universal nature of the theme and use of big, simple imagery are like broad brush strokes. In accepting the inevitability of the pain that comes with life, it has a strangely comforting message.

Comments: Al: I think I was going for a Bryan Ferry thing on this one. One of many demos I would love to record properly as it has a very spacious and evocative feel to it that could be beautifully treated in the studio.

Down to the sea in tears

Where all the rivers run

Why do we cry all our lives

And go down to the sea in tears?

I am a friend of the harbor lights

They know what I say

They answer me on windy nights

When I go down to the sea in tears

And when I go there

I go alone

And when I got there

I’m going home

The moon is a broken melody

On the waves as they come near

I let the wind blow away my pain

And I will walk on this shore for years

And when I go there

I see the sky

And when I go there

I say goodbye

Down to the sea in tears

Down to the sea in tears

Down to the sea in tears
