Shadow of the Rock

Written: 1983

Writers: David Jenneson, Alan Hovden

Status: Recorded but unpublished.

Genre and Style: Pop

Comments: Dave: I wrote this song after my youngest brother James, aged 25, was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1983. I was shattered, and became irrationally obsessed with finding him to make sure he was okay. This quest eventually ended in a psychic dream where I met him in a shady village in a place like Mexico, where he showed me his small whitewashed apartment, sat back happily playing his guitar and assured me he could come back and visit any time he wanted. This good news I was able to take back to my grief stricken family who took it as fact and were greatly relieved. The shadow of the rock is a biblical symbol for shelter. In the song it is used as a metaphor for sheltering in the memory of the love my brother had for me. Not only was it a tremendous healing process, but also the most straight from the heart song I have ever written. The melody Al put to it matches the sorrowful yet hopeful mood of the lyrics perfectly and it is really something to be enjoyed.

Comments: Al: I wrote and recorded this very quickly as it had to be ready for Dave’s brother’s funeral. I think it captured the mood we wanted and am still moved by it today.

 Shadow Of The Rock

       Vocals - Al Hovden

Now that you’re gone from my world

The wind blows dust in empty swirls

Where the sun is breathing hot

Find the strength

If I can make it

I will lay down in the shadow

The shadow of the rock.

Living in the shadow of the rock

Remembering the way you loved me

Living in the shadow

The shadow of the rock

Living in the shadow of the rock

Trying to stop the pain that never stops

I’m living in the shadow

The shadow of the rock

I searched through all these empty nights

I tried to touch your blazing light

Reaching out but I could not

Find the strength

If I can make it

I will lay down in the shadow

The shadow of the rock

Living in the shadow of the rock

Remembering the way you loved me

Living in the shadow

The shadow of the rock

Living in the shadow of the rock

Trying to stop the pain that never stops

I’m living in the shadow

The shadow of the rock
