So Ramble On

Written: 1979

Writers: David Jenneson

Status: Unrecorded and unpublished.

Genre and Style: Uptempo country ballad.

Comments: Dave: Ramble On is another song written in the wee hours when sleep was denied. The product of a tired mind, the lyrics are agreeably loose yet still have a tight spin with nice gritty images of the sun coming up after an all nighter – the after party crash. It is story known well by drunkards, gamblers and womanizers through the ages. Yet at the same time it testifies that this is the only life worth living. Today there are those living this lifestyle in every city and town who would still agree. The rambler/gambler archetype never dies. Although there is no melody written for the song to date the lyrics almost have their own music. It has a Glen Campbell or Chris Christopherson feel.

The dice dance on the tabletop

They spin and stop and suddenly its dawn

Brown whisky in a paper cup

The early morning newscast coming on

That girl I met tonight

I thought she might and it ain’t often that I’m wrong

If you go without the good times

You’re just young, then old, then gone

So ramble on

The one holding you tight

Will tell you when the night is gone

So ramble on

Like a southbound freight

Into the morning sun

So ramble on

A battered down old suitcase

Rides the Greyhound out of Denver down the line

Through Dixie, down to Dallas, Frisco

America, one barstool at a time

Among these scattered thoughts I have not lost

The memory that still drives me on.

The same one who still loves me

Is the one I’ve left so long.

So ramble on

The one holding you tight

Will tell you when the night is gone

So ramble on

Like a southbound freight

Into the morning sun

So ramble on
