Dreams of Gold

Written: 1989

Writers: David Jenneson, Alan Hovden

Status: Recorded but unpublished

Genre and Style: Rock/Pop

Comments: Dave: I wrote the lyrics to Dreams of Gold in 1989 after waking from a dream. In the dream I had been in an outdoor German beer garden shaded by leafy trees. The time was just prior to World War II. The beer garden was dotted with uniformed Nazis enjoying a Sunday off with a stein of beer. Then a young boy, aged about 15 with a shock of intensely blond hair stood, lifted a beer stein with a face on it and began singing. When I awoke I remembered enough of the words to write them down. I later realized what the dream meant. I was the young boy singing to myself, symbolized by the image of my face on the cup when I was thirty years older. The lyrics express the profound self disappointment at having abandoned the idealistic dreams of my youth for the mundane materialism of adulthood.

Comments: Al: Bruce Springsteen could have done this and had a huge hit!

I hold this image here of you

The porcelain is grey

What is your message to us?

What do you have to say?

You’re just a face upon this cup

And dust is all it holds

You’re golden dreams were only dreams of gold

Yes your golden dreams were only dreams of gold

Come on and give me those dreams

I want a piece of those dreams of gold

Come on and give me those dreams

Dreams of gold

To you its not so long ago

You took the world by storm

Then traded in your tattered coat

Why not own something warm?

Why not then take every job

The houses all are sold

You’re golden dreams were only dreams of gold

Yes you’re golden dreams were only dreams of gold

Come on and give me those dreams

I want a piece of those dreams of gold

Come on and give me those dreams

Dreams of gold

Come on and give me those dreams

I want a piece of those dreams of gold

Come on and give me those dreams

Dreams of gold

You take all the tomorrows

You already own today

Forget the past, your promises

Were no good anyway

An empty cup, a rainy street

I watch your world unfold

You’re golden dreams were only dreams of gold

Yes you’re golden dreams were only dreams of gold

I want a piece of those dreams of gold

Come on and give me those dreams

Dreams of gold

Come on and give me those dreams of gold

I want a piece of those dreams of gold

Come on and give me those dreams

Dreams of gold
