Roll Away

Written: 1985

Writers: David Jenneson, Peter Sinclair

Status: Unrecorded and unpublished.

Genre and Style: Outlaw country.

Comments: Dave: Roll Away is a deceptively simple outlaw country song with plenty of self esteem. Its unforgettable guitar lick and pounding four in the floor beat make it almost irresistible. The tight road tough verse contrasts with a joyful open chorus which seems to illuminate the song, like a ray of southern sunlight piercing the clouds of a dark wintry New York afternoon. It has great dynamics, one of the few country songs I know of that would benefit from an R&B horn section doing brass shots. Of all the unrecorded and unpublished Burner songs, this may have the most potential. It is a tragedy it was never recorded. Almost any country artist could record it today and, with the proper arrangement, have a hit on their hands.

I’m feeling like that midnight train

I’m gonna roll away

I won’t be back again

So cry Lucille!

Goodbye Sue!

Sure been nice knowing all of you

Hello L.A., goodbye New York City

Gonna find myself someone young, warm and pretty

And it feels like the right direction

Rolling toward the sun

It feels like the right direction

Roll away!

Roll away!

Rolling toward the sun

Roll away!

Roll away!

Rolling toward the sun

I said I had it when the rain turned into snow

I’m gonna roll away

And I know which way I’ll go

So – cry Lucille!

Goodbye Sue!

Sure been nice knowing all of you

These eighteen wheels

I feel them driving through the snow

I can smell the breezes from the Gulf of Mexico

And it feels like the right direction

Rolling toward the sun

It feels like the right direction

Roll away!

Roll away!

Rolling toward the sun

Roll away!

Roll away!

Rolling toward the sun
