Romance in the Age of the Ray Gun

Written: 1985

Writers: David Jenneson, Alan Hovden

Status: Recorded but unpublished.

Genre and Style: Sci-fi Pop

Comments: Dave: This was an attempt to superimpose a leading edge storyline onto an upbeat, traditional big band genre, when computer chat rooms were only a glint in God’s eye. It is an unlikely match but it works. The lyrics have been updated slightly but the concept is still there. It poses the old question – is real romance possible in a cyber world? Twenty years later time has since proven that it apparently is.

Comments: Al: This is like a Buck Rogers sci-fi romanctic pop tune to me… a mash up of eras!

Meet me on your chat room screen

And we’ll go out tonight

You only need to

Send your answer back to me

Up on the screen

In bright letters of green

Do you believe in

Romance in the age of the ray gun

I’ll pray to the satellites tonight

That it will be all right

Romance in the age of the ray gun

If you tell me that you’ll be mine tonight

In real time

There even might be romance

Romance is yours at a glance

I’ll break into your trance

When my words flash

On your chat room screen

We’ll turn down the lights

And then we can dance

Cause we believer in

Romance in the age of the ray gun

I’ll pray to the satellites tonight

That it will be all right

Romance in the age of the ray gun

If you tell me that you’ll be mine tonight

In real time

There even might be romance
